Should Cannabis Seeds Sink or Float?

So as a grower you just bought your new cannabis seeds. Now you need to grow these seeds and have heard of the sink and float method of cannabis seed germination.

This is a very simple method used to start to see if the seeds that you bought or were given to you are going to germinate before you put them in the soil.

Science behind Cannabis Seed Viability the floating water test

In nature cannabis seeds are food for many animals big and small. They are also a great protein source for insects. Once the seeds are eaten by the insect, they will get inside the seed, it will no longer be able to absorb water. Therefore the seeds will float.

Not all seeds will work for these methods however cannabis seeds are one of those types of seeds.

Experiments With the Sink or Float for Cannabis Seeds

In tests the average of all tests showed a germination of 68.3 per cent for sunken seeds and 72 per cent for those that floated. In a second set of experiments, it was found that 75.4 percent of the sunken seeds and 86.7 percent of those that floated germinated. Pretty cool stuff, however it shows that the cannabis seeds sink or float method is not always 100% fool proof.

Where to find cannabis seeds to grow online

There are many places to buy cannabis seeds online, we recommend Green Avenger Seeds if you are looking to buy cannabis seeds online. They have great seeds to use for trying the sink or float method of cannabis seed germination.

What do cannabis seeds need to germinate

When germinating cannabis seeds it all comes down to the right amount of warmth and moisture that is provided for the seed. As a new grower you will be looking for seeds that are dark brown in color, they may have stripes on them. Cannabis seeds that are not mature will look white, green, or even gray in colors.

The seeds should be firm and not have any cracks in them. If you push on them gently they should not break in between your fingers.

How to add your seeds to water

First take your new seeds, then fill up a glass of water about half full not half empty (LOL). The water should be clean and have a neutral PH of about 6.5 to 7.0.

For a bonus you can add a drop of Superthrive, and also a teaspoon of kelp (Seaweed extract), this will really give the seeds a jump start as the kelp contains growth hormone that will activate the cannabis seeds.

Place you seeds in the dark

Now you are ready to cover your seeds and place the glass in the dark for 24 hours. The glass with the seeds should be in a warm spot that is dark for best results.

Now Check if your Cannabis Seeds Sink or Float

After 24 hours comes the big moment, you can remove the glass of seeds from the dark and check on them, you should see the viable seeds floating at the top of the glass. They should start to have a sprout growing out of them. If they do not you may want to place them back in the dark for another 12 hours.

The Cannabis Seeds that were not viable, will have sunken to the bottom of your glass in the water.

Planting your Floating Cannabis Seeds

Now that your seeds are floating that means that you can now plant them in your soil mix.

Gently remove the seeds from the glass with tweezers and make sure you place the germination sprout that has emerged for the cannabis seed facing down in the soil. This new young sprout will push its way down into the soil and at the same time push the seed and the first young leaves above the soil.

Growers achieve 100% Germination rates with the Cannabis Seed Sink or Float method

This seed starting method works very well and you will normally get a perfect germination rate with fresh cannabis seeds.

Why Use the Cannabis Seed Sink or Float Method

When starting seeds directly in the soil, you really don’t know if they will be viable or not. With the Cannabis Seed Sink or Float Method you know that the seed has already germinated.

This process takes the guessing game out of the process, you know that within a day to a couple of days your seedling will break ground.

There are many other ways to germinate cannabis seeds and we will be covering more.

seeds directly sinked when i put them into a glass of water

i bought 5 WW and 5 skunk #1 ( both feminized and both of them is seedsman ) from attitude and i put them a glass of water to crack.

however, some of seeds directly sinked as soon as when i put into water while others floating .after 5-6 hours, all seeds sinked and i put all of them into rockwool cubes.
deoes it mean directly sinked seeds are dead ?

Some seeds are simply initially denser (heavier) than others because of an internal greater water content. In other words: some seeds sink immediately, others take time.

You are fine. Some seeds sink right away & some dont. The fat round seeds usually always sink. The small ones seem to float. But you can leave the seeds in the water until you see cracks. Just make sure the water is PH’d just right.

Do not keep them in water for more than 24h. After 24h take them out and put them into wet paper towel.

what is the longest you ‘ve left a seed in water before you took it out of the glass blueskies?

I ‘ve seen pics of seeds(floating) with well developed taproot in glass of water but I ve never left seeds for more than 24-36 hrs myself.. I don’t really soak seeds to be honest tho , only old ones or seeds from hard to germ strains. Usually go strait with wet towels or in wet soil.

Yeah, I’ve drowned a few seeds myself.:sad0123:
I use a slightly damp hand towel now, its amazing how little water it takes to germ a seed. Less is more for me on the waterfront, maybe I’m just a clusterfuck when i comes to germing though. Glass of water= mushy seeds for me.

Rootbound

For fresh seeds I soak them in a glass of warm PH’d tap water with a drop of superthrive for 1 Hour at the most!! Then straight into coco or soil. I use tap water because it has a small amount of chlorine in it to kill off any bacteria on the outside of the seed.Great results. ROOT

Seeds soak any longer then 48 hours will likely suffer from oxy deprivation. I use a lil heat and soak over night adn usaully have tails from 12 – 24 hours then I go directly to soil.

It works well with warm to slightly hot water with first droppin seeds. After 24hrs to 36 you may want to change the water. This is one way to gurantee germination! Ive seen people report on the paper towel method but guess what. water is by far the fastest. Do make sure that you store the cup or whatever you choose somewere kind of warm. The water technique sucks in cold temp rooms. to answer your ques Ive started some of outlaw genetics magic merlin and there were just a few that didnt do anything in the water within 48hrs. I forgot about them noticed 4to 5 days later that they had popped and had completely removed the shell off layin at the bottom of the water!

blueskies -with respect, just because your seeds survived 5 days submerged in water doesnt mean it is good advice to do it.

one way that gardeners kill weeds and their seeds is to submerge them in water for a couple of weeks before putting them on the compost heap!

i soak for 12 hours max and then straight into soil. i have lots of books about horticulture and not one of them advises you to germ any type of seeds in paper towel before planting it .
i know that is the most popular way amongst weed growers but a germinating seed is the most delicate stage of plant growth and there is a high risk of some damage to the tiny root hairs by ripping them off a paper towel and planting them.

if i knew for sure that my seeds were really fresh i wouldnt even soak them – just plant them. soaking helps older seeds that have lost some of their natural water content

Are Marijuana Seeds Good When They Float in Water?

Table of content

As anyone who has ever tried to grow marijuana knows, getting the seeds to germinate can be a tricky process. There are a lot of factors that come into play, and if even one is off, it can mean the difference between a bountiful harvest and a disappointing one. So when you’re trying to germinate your seeds, you’ll take any edge you can get. Which is why some people swear by the float test.

Should my marijuana seeds float?

Marijuana seeds are known to float. However, some people believe that marijuana seeds sink in water. There is no right or wrong answer to this question, as it depends on the specific water conditions and the type of marijuana seed.

Are seeds viable if they float?

Marijuana seeds float in water, but are they viable? The short answer is that it depends on the strain of marijuana.

Some strains of marijuana are more prone to floating and others are more prone to sinking. However, most strains of marijuana can be viable if they sink in water.

How do you tell if a seed is good or bad?

Marijuana seeds can sometimes float on water and look like small, white pebbles. If the seed is rotten or has fungus growing on it, it will sink to the bottom quickly. Healthy marijuana seeds will float on top of water and take a while to sink.

Why do some seeds float on water?

Have you ever wondered why some seeds sink when placed in water, while others float? The answer has a lot to do with the embryo and the seed coat. The embryo is responsible for the seed’s buoyancy. The embryo consists of a layer of cells that accounts for 65% of the seed weight. This layer of cells contains air pockets, which make the embryo more resistant to sinking and helps it stay afloat on water. Additionally, this layer of cells contains oil globules that give the seed its characteristic greasy texture. The seed coat is made up of tough layers that protect the embryo and absorb water. These layers also contain air pockets and oil globules. When water enters these pockets, it creates a force that pushes up ward against the surrounding layer of oil globules, making the seed float on water.

How long do you leave seeds in water?

One of the key questions when it comes to growing marijuana is whether or not you should leave your seeds in water. Many people believe that if the seeds are left in water they will germinate and grow. However, there is no definitive answer as to how long you should leave the seeds in water before removing them. Many growers recommend leaving the seeds in water for anywhere from 12- 24 hours before rinsing them off and planting them. The length of time that you leave the seeds in water will largely depend on a few factors such as temperature, humidity, and light availability.

What happens when seeds are soaked in water?

When seeds are soaked in water, they will start to sink. This is because the water will fill up the spaces between the seeds and cause them to sink. The water will also cause the seeds to swell, which will make them heavier and cause them to sink even more.

Can seeds germinate in water only?

Some people believe that marijuana seeds should not be submerged in water because they may sink to the bottom. True or false, does this theory work?

The answer is both yes and no. The truth is that some of the seeds will sink to the bottom while others will float, but it doesn’t matter because they all end up growing marijuana plants either way. What matters more is how well the seed was soaked in water and if it has any mold or fungus on it. If there are any contaminants on the seed, then exposure to water can cause problems such as mold growth or even cell death.

It is generally believed that marijuana seeds are good when they float in water. However, there is no scientific evidence to support this claim. While some people believe that sinking seeds are more viable, there is no guarantee that this is the case. It is also important to note that bad seeds can float as well, so it is not a foolproof method of determining seed quality. If you want to soak your seeds in water, it is recommended that you do so for 12-24 hours before planting them. This will give them time to germinate and start growing into healthy plants.
